Income Generation

The people of Kpilo depend on the land for their income.
Current sources of income include the selling of vegetables and other crops in the local market, aswell as the rearing of animals.

What can be done about it?

We are working on making the maximum use of the land available in Kpilo and surrounding areas, to improve land productivity and to provide a more stable income.

This involves projects such as Apisilvopasture, where the same area of land is used to grow trees, small crops and provide grazing for the animals.

Another income generator is the selling of shea butter. However, this is a time and season dependent process, which doesn’t always go to plan.
The locals find themselves busy for four months of the year during the wet season, tending to the trees and crops, then idle for many months whilst they wait for the crop to grow and harvest time approaches. This dead-time means no money is coming in, and resources run low.
